Acid Reflux Drugs Linked to Stomach Bug

Acid reflux drugs such as Aciphex, Prevacid and Prilosec have been linked to a diarrhea-causing bug called Clostridium difficile or C. diff. this class of drugs is called proton pump inhibitors or PPIs. Japanese researchers followed about 500 patients who were taking these PPIs and the risk for getting this C. diff bug was about three times greater than those not taking them. The number of those infected though was still pretty low, with 19 of the 487 coming down with the bug. and it was noted that these drugs are for serious acid reflux symptoms, not just the occasional heartburn. Health Poll  Loading … So what exactly is acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)? It’s a condition where the contents of your stomach actually back up into your esophagus and essentially cause symptoms like severe heartburn. Some common risk factors include obesity, smoking, pregnancy, genetics and possibly even drinking alcohol. Learning your triggers can go a long way in controlling symptoms, such as avoiding spicy foods and herbs like peppermint. This must be frustrating for those acid reflex sufferers who are looking for relief from their symptoms only to get diarrhea from their medication. Are there any natural remedies out there? Well, though there’s limited clinical evidence, many swear by apple cider vinegar, ginger and lavender tea. Diet remains a key factor so discuss the best eating plan for you with your doctor.  You may also like:

Burning For Two – Acid Reflux And Indigestion While Pregnant

If you sit and talk to any group of pregnant women anywhere in the world aboutthe various discomforts they must endure during pregnancy they will all likelyagree on one that is worst than most. what is it? Acid reflux. Many years agothere was an old wives tale that women who suffered from heartburn would givebirth to a child with a full head of hair. This, of course, is purely mythical. That aside acid reflux is still a hugely annoying thing to have to endure whileyou are pregnant.Reasons For Acid Reflux in Pregnant Women there are several reasons why pregnantwomen are more likely to experience heartburn:1. Hormone levels in a pregnant woman are far higher than a woman who is notpregnant. This dramatic increase in hormone levels can have a huge effect onevery aspect of your body and especially your digestive system. The most commoneffect is that the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) can loosen up a bit. This isa type of valve which typically holds the food in your stomach. if this valve isloose then acid can flow back upwards into your gullet (esophagus). You will thenexperience heartburn to a varying degree.2. during pregnancy your body will change shape. This normally does not happenuntil later in pregnancy. When these changes do happen your stomach area willkeep expanding and this expansion is what can lead to acid reflux. Your stomachenlarging in this way puts far more pressure on the esophagus which can thenlead to indigestion and acid reflux in general. Is there anything You Can Do?There is always something you can do to helpyourself Firstly watch what you eat. Citrus foods, mint, spicy foods, friedfoods, and chocolate should all be avoided as much as possible.Eat smaller meals too. This will help a lot if you experience a lot ofmorning (and daytime, evening and nighttime) sickness too. if you eat severalsmall meals throughout the day you are far less likely to experience heartburn.Your body will be able to process those small meals far easier than 2 or 3 largeones.Correct Your PostureBelieve it or not practicing correct posture can help anawful lot with acid reflux. be especially careful of how you bend. Whilepregnant you should always bend down at the knees – although later you will haveno choice but to do so as your stomach expands. however earlier on in yourpregnancy bending down at the knees will put far less pressure on your stomachand therefore your esophagus. This can and will help you with the discomforts ofindigestion. You can fight back against acid reflux during your pregnancy. You simply have tochoose to. Do not suffer in silence however and do not ever be afraid to consultwith your doctor for medication if the heartburn becomes too painful to bear.

Push presents for mom: easy bling or heartfelt?

By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press Published: Sunday, July 3, 2011 at 6:01 a.m. Last Modified: Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 7:01 p.m. NEW YORK — Rachel Zoe has a beautiful baby boy. to celebrate, husband Rodger Berman gave her a “push present” in the form of a 10-carat diamond ring that cost $250,000. Mariah Carey got a push present, too — a $12,000 pink diamond and sapphire necklace from husband Nick Cannon with the names of their twins, Moroccan and Monroe. Peggy Tanous of “the Real Housewives of Orange County” turned her mega-mommy gift into a tagline:“Soccer moms drive a minivan, but this girl drives a Bentley.”Back here on earth, where the rest of us live and spend, can new dads get away with a simple bouquet of flowers, a token bauble with the new arrival’s birthstone or — as one father suggested — a kiss and a smile? And what do feminists make of the arguably medieval notion of rewarding a woman for producing an heir? Gina Crosley-Corcoran, who writes the Feminist Breeder blog, was pregnant with her third child in April when she found herself ruminating on the subject, in response to some doubters on her Facebook page:“As I sit here in my hugely pregnant state, suffering from heartburn, gas, leg pain, hip pain, insomnia, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, heat flashes, gastric upset, swelling, and everything else that comes with having an entirely formed human being kicking around in my womb, who will soon demand on coming OUT of my womb through a relatively small orifice in a not-at-all-pleasant feeling manner, I cannot help but think Seriously?!?! Seriously. A freaking diamond is the LEAST he can do.”It was a girl for the 33-year-old pre-law student, women’s rights advocate, doula and former rock chick in a band. She live-blogged the birth, her first at home, and received a tiny diamond (her baby girl’s birthstone) for a pendant she and her husband had begun with the birthstones of their two boys.“I was surprised that people equated push presents to, like, giving a horse a prize at the end of the race,” Crosley-Corcoran said. “I agree the term push present could be changed. Let’s just call them birth presents.”There’s no official history of push presents, a term some object to on grounds that it cheapens the occasion. by some accounts, post-partum bling seems to have made its way to the United States over the last decade or so from England, where a ring was in order, and from India, where gold jewelry was the way to go (boys apparently meant more gold than girls, traditionally speaking). The idea wasn’t lost on jewelers. the retailer Mayors took on the tradition in a 2005 ad campaign for diamond studs: “She delivered your first born, now give her twins.” Fortunoff thought up a push present registry in 2007. that was the year BabyCenter.com surveyed 30,000 women and found 38 percent of new moms got a push present — and 55 percent of the still-pregnant wanted one. In fact, it’s hard to find a naysayer. “Giving birth is hard work and I am not going to quibble with anyone piling any kind of gift at any woman’s feet,” said Naomi Wolf, the third-wave feminist author of “the Beauty Myth” and — more to the point — “Misconceptions.” In that book, she chronicled the not-so-smooth experience of having her first child and her angsty start on motherhood.“I think women do expect more than flowers because of what our society and media have told them they should expect,” said Jessica LeRoy, founder and clinical director of the Center for the Psychology of Women, a feminist-based psychotherapy practice in Los Angeles. “it is a status symbol, and women feel this need to measure up, their child to measure up and their partner. This is an actual outward expression of their status and family.”Kristen Burris in Eagle, Idaho, used to be a push present skeptic. the acupuncturist and herbalist thought the idea was “self-indulgent and ridiculous,” yet another way to turn childbirth into an over-the-top outgrowth of a consumer-driven culture. Then she got pregnant. While attempting natural childbirth, Burris pushed for 12 hours without success and was treated to an emergency C-section, done, she said, without adequate anesthesia. After, her husband’s grandmother gave her a pair of diamond studs she had previously borrowed for seven hours to wear at her wedding. Her second baby came with an upgrade of the center stone in her engagement ring.“In my heart I feel these pieces of jewelry already belong to my two sons, honoring who they are and where they came from,” Burris said.Emily Loen is single without children, but she hopes to become a mother eventually. She’s also an organizer for the Bay Area Coalition for our Reproductive Rights in San Francisco. To follow up childbirth with a “trivial trinket” seems “very shallow, stupid and insipid,” Loen said. But, in the end, she added, “Feminism is about choice. it comes down to whatever floats your boat.”Does Gloria Steinem approve of push presents?“unfortunately Gloria doesn’t have a comment on this — not having much personal experience with it nor the experiences of friends to go off of,” her office said in an email.Loen is 29. Steinem is 77, so maybe there’s a generational shift. “Marriage is socialism among two people,” women’s rights thinker Barbara Ehrenreich once said. nearly a decade Steinem’s junior, she, too, had never heard of push presents.“I mean, the baby used to be enough of a reward,” Ehrenreich said. “But I suppose that if you’re not really into babies, you might need a little more ‘incentivization.”’

Understanding GERD Symptoms

Anyone who has ever suffered through GERD symptoms will know that they go beyond a mere annoyance. some people experience symptoms which are relatively mild while others have what they classify as excruciating pain. however, even though GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) originates in the stomach, most often the severest of symptoms are in the throat. Sometimes it is simply referred to as heartburn, but the actual condition doctors refer to as GERD is much more severe than a simple case of heartburn or acid reflux. In some cases of GERD symptoms throat pain is quite severe and over time can also develop into other diseases as a result of ongoing acidic reflux. But in the beginning,GERD symptoms may be mild enough to simply be written off as indigestion. The reason for this ‘self misdiagnosis’ is clear because of how GERD presents. Food that is eaten is supposed to pass through the throat, through the stomach and on through the digestive tract. With GERD,there is a breakdown in a ring of muscles that are meant to prevent food from regurgitating back up into the esophagus and throat.Because of all the acidity in the contents of the stomach,GERD symptoms throat discomfort is quite common. Unfortunately, although GERD symptoms throat relief is available for temporary relief, the most severe cases of GERD can cause permanent damage to the esophagus over time. if you have been experiencing symptoms that mimic heartburn more often than would be probable with simple heartburn,it is suggested that you speak with your physician at the earliest possible opportunity. It is suggested that you try to control GERD symptoms with intelligent lifestyle choices. For example, foods that are overly acidic will just tend to exacerbate the problem if you are having a particularly troublesome bout. Also,GERD symptoms women experience when pregnant can actually prove to worsen the ‘morning sickness’ that is part and parcel of a normal pregnancy. if you are unsuccessful in reducing or eliminating GERD symptoms with pharmaceuticals, naturopathic antacids or lifestyle changes, surgery may be a viable option. some physicians can perform an endoscopic procedure if the symptoms are not too severe while there may be times when major surgery is required. in any case, getting an accurate diagnosis of GERD is of primary importance before assuming this is what you are suffering from. Just as some symptoms mimic GERD,so too can GERD symptoms mimic other, more serious, diseases.

Mountain Home News: Blog: What Am I Bid?

Posted Monday, June 20, 2011, at 10:12 AM America is being sold out from under us, and Americans themselves are being turned into 2nd class citizens in our own country, though not enough people realize that yet to band together and DO something about it.The most recent example is that pot growing area in Oregon. Just one more place where the bad guys have felt free to TAKE OVER, because really………..what gets done?In Arizona, the Feds have posted signs at the boundary lines of National Parks, WARNING AMERICANS to stay OUT of their own public recreation areas that they are TAXED for………..but the Feds have NOT seen fit to go IN there and clean them OUT!They used National Guard to put down AMERICAN disturbances like Kent State in the 60′s, WACO (where cult leader David Koresh jogged outside of that compund almost daily and they COULD have grabbed him anytime they wanted to—–instead of waiting until every tv camera was on it, and then GRANDSTAND, which only got a bunch of innicent people killed)…….then there was Ruby Ridge, where Vicki Weaver and her baby were obviously terrorists and that sniper was turned loose on them….We use our GUARD units to supplement our REGULAR troops over in the mid-east now.But we don’t deploy them HERE while the roaches are continuing to crawl in under our “woodwork”. National Guard…………hmmmm……what does “NATIONAL” mean to YOU? Here in America (as far as I know, anyway), we do NOT have an “INTERNATIONAL Guard”Arizona……if I was the next president, the first thing I’d do, is throw Eric Holder in jail for treason. that “LAWSUIT” is no different than if a building out on base caught fire…….the fire Department doesn’t respond, so 2 dozen airmen quickly band together with water hoses, shovels & dirt and put the fire out THEMSELVES——–next thing they know…..the Base Commander decides to COURT-MARTIAL the AIRMEN for interfering—————”That’s the Base FIRE Department’s job….not YOURS”"But……….the fire Dept NEVER SHOWED UP….and we called them FIVE TIMES, and MY house might be NEXT if we didn’t stop it!”"Are you questioning ME, MY office, and My prestige?” says the ATTORNEY GENERAL…..who had ADMITTEDLY never even READ the friggin’ Federal Border Laws himself? They never take the time to read ANYTHING….they just draft up half of this crap in the middle of the night and give it to Obama to sign.Do you HUNT?………FISH?…….let somebody from Fish & Game catch you with the slightest infraction, and see what happens. nobody has the “time, equipment or manpower” to travel the terrain looking for any TRULY ILLEGAL activities…….the fisherman down by the bank is much “easier game.” and a SURE CITATION if you want to look hard enough for something. It isn’t “intrusive, degrading or demeaning” to demand a drug test for a JOB APPLICANT………but it IS for a WELFARE applicant.See how that works?CRIME. I still recall a most MEMORABLE televised “gun control” debate, where the liberal panel was calling for a total ban of all handguns, (as usual). the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre pointed out that 84% of all guns (at that time) were in the hands of honest law-abiding citizens, and that other 16% were mostly made up of guns that nobody bought through dealers, so there was no paperwork……and ANYWAY, if there WAS a LEGAL BAN……….the “BAD GUYS” would never turn THEIRS in anyway!Senator Howard Metzenbaum, being the liberal “#&^*@##%#” HE was, says………..”Well, at LEAST we would get that 84% off the streets!”yeah…..that’s RIGHT, Howard…….let’s just disarm the HONEST and make it even EASIER for those who DIDN’T comply……………just like Holder & Arizona, it makes you wonder WHOSE SIDE they are on.We warm up to Hugo Chavez, offer to help NORTH Korea, and welcome the SAUDIS here to Mountain Home……but we throw our allies under the bus.Our property values and property taxes pass each other going in opposite directions…….but we’re in “recovery.” I’ll believe THAT when my wallet starts reflecting it.The IRS will make YOU account for every penny………but the “boys & girls” back there in D.C. blow MILLIONS of our dollars every week, and account to WHO?……WHO?We’re supposed to “respect” everyone else’s cultures while they SPIT on US.”Pedro” in Chile loses his house in a flood. our tax dollars build him a new one.”Charlie” in Mississippi loses HIS home in a flood……if he QUALIFIES, we may give him a “low-interest” LOAN.See how that works? We borrow money from China, and then give THEM foreign aid! if they actually NEEDED foreign aid, how could they afford to loan money to US? Anybody ever think of that? The government prints out money when it needs it, without anything tangible to back it up. THEY don’t consider that as “counterfeiting.”YOU TRY THAT.Anybody heard anything about Butch Otter selling 30,000 acres of land south of Boise to the Chinese? if it’s true, what do ya suppose THAT’s all about? There is considerable property here in America that IS owned by foreign countries. Do you suppose an American can OWN LAND down in Mexico? Check THAT one out, along with the REST of THEIR rules that apply to “foereigners”……yet it is WE who are so “unfair and mean-spirited, prejudiced, arrogant” and whatever ELSE they come up with from time to time.We have been the most generous, most GIVING and TOLERANT country in history. But before we “GIVE” until it’s all GIVEN AWAY, we need to stop…….before we get sold to the “highest bidder.”Continuing to raise taxes as some kind of “automatic cure” everytime the government gets into trouble, is financial SUICIDE.Taxes don’t NEED to go up. the wasteful SPENDING needs to STOP, and government needs to be DOWNSIZED.Like a good friend of mine was telling me just this past Saturday, the “created” should NEVER have power over the “creator”……..we “CREATED” that monstrosity back there, so I would think we can certainly “UN-create it” as well. They are sent to Washington to represent us……..not to REGULATE us.If the Dems ever get that figured out, and decide to join with the rest of us in a joint cause, we can put things RIGHT again (no pun intended), and maybe it WON’T HAVE to come to another “1776″Of course, if we DO get sold out completely and taken over, all bets will be off…….even the patriots won’t adhere to the Constitution or any other set of rules. When that happens, maybe I’ll have to go back to San Francisco. We “Potrero Hill” boys never went by any rules in the first place.”So what am I bid for the west coast?…..sunny weather, 1200 miles of slightly polluted beachfront properties……plently of empty storefronts on vacant lots……..some of the roads are still paved……we’ll start the bidding in Euro-dollars……..or the currency of your choice……….who’ll start the bidding at a hundred thousand?………….”CommentsShowing comments in chronological order[Show most recent comments first]

An Open Letter to Alyssa Milano About Her ‘Perfect’ Pregnancy

Dear Alyssa Milano, You don’t know me, but we grew up together. I so badly wanted to be you as I watched you week after week on Who’s the Boss? I was pretty determined to change my name to Samantha too, but I never got around to it. Anyway, congratulations on your pregnancy and all. It’s been fun watching as you go through all the things that we pregnant women do, and you look fabulous. you clearly enjoy the whole miraculous pregnancy experience more than most. in fact, you’re downright gushing about it all, ALL the time. I believe you were recently quoted as saying the following: I’ve had such a great time being pregnant that you’re probably going to see me more pregnant than not in the next few years because I’m really digging it. Good for you, really. But as someone who got a little bit of a head start on you in the children department (my babies are 7 and 2), I have a few words of advice for you. Stop with perfect pregnancy posturing! You’re making us all jealous once again. Also, you’re in the honeymoon period of pregnancy right now, and unless you’re among the very small population who enjoys it until the end (and I suspect most of them lie), you may be eating your words in a month or two … well, if the heartburn allows you to consume anything at all by then. Right now, you’re having a blast picking out baby names and decorating the nursery for your new baby boy, but soon you may not be able to pick up anything from the floor because you will be so enormous. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a glorious time, but just don’t start buying cribs for all these babies you plan to have soon. There’s a chance you may change your mind about not seeing your toes or having a good night’s sleep for years on end. Even if your first pregnancy goes without a single uncomfortable day, your second pregnancy and those beyond it are NOTHING like your first. Because, you see, you have your first to chase around all day. so even if your head is in the toilet because of morning sickness, you still have to keep your first-born alive and well too. Add a couple more, and that perfectly blissful pregnancy of which you speak will be a long forgotten memory no matter how many nannies you may have. I’m not trying to be a downer, and I hope you have a houseful of children and are pregnant for years to come if that’s what you wish. I just wish you’d be a little less perky about the whole experience because there are pregnant women out there who can’t relate. And like your perfectly feathered hair back in the day, you’re causing us all to yearn for what’s unattainable for most. Sincerely, A mother who has been there, done that. P.S. Also, your cravings for broccoli are LAME. Could you please think about some French fries dipped in a chocolate milkshake with a side of marshmallows or something? Do women who gush about the perfection of pregnancy make you gag … even a little? Image via Splash News

Heartburn drugs not linked to birth defects in pregnant women

The list of PPIs include Prilosec (omeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole), and Nexium (esomeprazole).Till now, doctors have been worrying that the intake of the drugs might prove unsafe during pregnancy. However, the study claims that the drugs, especially Prilosec, are safe for women who are pregnant as well as those planning to get pregnant. the study detailsThe study, funded by the Danish Medical Research Council and the Lundbeck Foundation, looked at the database of almost 841,000 babies born in Denmark from January 1996 to September 2008.The usage level of PPIs by the mothers was recorded by the researchers.Major birth defects were reported in 3.4 percent of the babies whose mothers had been exposed to a PPI in utero as compared to 2.6 percent of the unexposed babies.Consumption of Prilosec during the month before conception was not associated with an increase in any birth defect, the study revealed. However, a 39 percent higher risk of major birth defects was witnessed in babies whose mothers took PPIs during the month before conception.”Having negative observations is never absolutely reassuring,” Dr. Michael Katz, senior vice president for research and global programs at the March of Dimes said. “All you can say is that within that range [in this case, 800,000 infants], the probability is that it is safe,” he explained.Minimum usage advisedIn spite of the promising results of the research, experts still recommend the minimal exposure to the drugs during pregnancy.”In general, these are probably safe but it takes a lot of time and a lot of exposures before you see some of the abnormalities that might exist,” explained Dr. Eva Pressman, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center.”My recommendations are always to avoid medication exposure if at all possible. there are very few life-threatening disorders that require these PPIs,” she noted. The study has been published in the Nov. 25 issue of the ‘New England Journal of Medicine.’
